Turning sixty in South Africa often comes with a move. Out of the family house that is now too big and too much work, into an estate, a retirement village, a townhouse complex or a sectional-title block closer to everything. It is one of the most common life changes of this decade, and it quietly rearranges your entire social world.
That rearrangement is where a great many people on this site find themselves, and it cuts both ways.
The Village Is Sociable, Which Is Not Always the Point
Retirement villages and secure estates are, on the whole, remarkably good at community. There are committees and bowls and book clubs and somebody organising a braai every other weekend. Nobody is short of company in the way they might be in a house on their own.
But company and companionship are different things, and this is where people get caught out. You can spend all week surrounded by perfectly nice neighbours and still close your own front door at six every evening onto complete silence. A full calendar does nothing at all for the particular loneliness of having nobody of your own to tell about your day.
The other complication is that a village is a small pond and everybody watches. Dating somebody two doors down is a considerable commitment, because if it does not work you will still be seeing them at the pool on Saturday. A great many people would rather meet somebody from outside entirely, for exactly that reason, and that is a perfectly sensible instinct.
Looking Beyond the Gate
So widen the search. The next suburb, the next town, the city an hour up the road. If you have moved recently you may not yet have a feel for what is around you, and the answer is usually far more than you would think.
The practical points are the familiar ones: your own transport, a busy public place in the middle of the day, and let somebody know where you are going. That done, an hour's drive to meet somebody interesting is a decent outing rather than a chore, especially in a decade when your time is finally your own.
Money, Plainly
Worth naming because it is on everyone's mind and rarely said. Retirement funding in this country is a genuine worry for a great many people, and circumstances at sixty-plus vary enormously depending on decisions made decades ago.
The people who handle this well are simply matter-of-fact. Suggest things that suit both budgets, do not make assumptions, and be relaxed about who pays for what rather than turning it into a statement. Almost nobody wants to be a project, and almost everybody can tell when they are being assessed.
Still Working, and No Shame in It
Plenty of South Africans in their sixties are still working, whether by choice or necessity, and it is entirely unremarkable. It does mean your available time looks different from somebody fully retired, and that is worth mentioning early so nobody is confused about why weekday plans never quite happen.
What This Decade Is Genuinely Like
For all the practicalities, most people find their sixties considerably better than they expected. The heavy responsibilities have eased, you know exactly what you like, and there is very little appetite left for nonsense. That makes for direct, easy, pleasant company, and it is a rather good basis for meeting somebody.
